Core Requirements (all ACMS majors):

A general rule is to take the ACMS Core requirements early in your program, along with courses that are prerequisites for other courses. They are foundation courses and also are strictly required for all ACMS majors. We have included when the courses are typically offered to help with planning, however, we cannot guarantee course availability especially during Summers. A = Autumn, W = Winter, Sp = Spring, S = Summer

All prerequisite information is located on the Course Catalog. Please check all prerequisites.

Math 307 or AMath 351: These courses are extremely similar. Please only choose one. Offered AWSpS

Math 308: Offered AWSpS

AMath 352: Offered AWSpS. Similar to Math 308.

Math 381: Offered AW, sometimes offered S.

Math/Stat 390: Offered AWSpS. Difficult to get into as it is not restricted to majors only. Math 394 replaces Math/Stat 390 for Data Science Option students. Stat 311 and IND E 315 cannot count for any ACMS requirement, including this one.

AMath 383: Typically offered AWSpS

Planning Tips by Option:

Biological and Life Sciences (BLS)
  • Check AMath 423 prerequiste
  • If you are not a double with a biological or life science major watch for prerequisites for your 300-level coursework
  • Lab classes do not automatically count as Group II electives
Discrete Math and Algorithms (DMA)
  • Degree Audits can be confusing for Group I electives. For Group I, students must take two math courses from Math 407/8/9 and Math 461/2, and then either one additional math course from that list OE one AMath class from AMath 481/2/3. Said another way, students need three math, or two math and one AMath.
  • Math 407/8/9 and Math 461/2 are reserved for graduating ACMS majors in DMA. This means your plan should have your Optimization or Combinatorics courses in Senior year. Special registration instructions will be emailed to the acmsmajors listserv during the regular academic year.
  • Math 408 has a prerequisites of Math 327 and either Math 407 or Math 464
Engineering and Physical Science (EPS)

Data Science and Statistics (DS)
  • Statistics courses can have 300-level prerequisites that may only be offered once a year including Stat 391, Stat 403, and Stat 435
